The Story:
The Rosehips are working hard to finish our 2014 Alternatives to Emergency Medical Services projects. In addition to our usual work around community healthcare, this year we embarked on a theatre project, Holding Onto The Sky. This original, collaboratively-written play explores community-based healthcare in the fictional setting of post-earthquake Portland. We are also putting together a follow-up to our well-received zine, “Alternatives to EMS.” This follow-up is an anthology of stories from healthcare providers and laypersons about how they worked within or without the current system to provide healthcare and meet the needs of their communities.
What We Need:
Holding Onto The Sky is funded in part by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. Their grant helps us to cover many of the expenses of writing an original work, renting a performance space, building a set, and paying performers and crew. However the grant does not cover the entire budget, and we need approximately $700 additional to finish the project. Some of our perks include tickets to our performances the weekends of November 15th and 22nd!
The Anthology is a follow-up to the Alternatives to EMS zine, for which Rosehip received a $500 grant from the Institute for Anarchist Studies. That grant allowed us to research and publish a top-rate zine which has been reprinted several times. In compiling the Anthology, Rosehip opted not to apply for a second grant, which has left us needing to cover publication costs from our pocket. First-round printing will cost approximately $400. Some of our perks include the zines Rosehip has published in the past and guaranteed copies of the Anthology when it comes out!
Rosehip operates on a low budget, and everything we offer, from zines to our 20-hour medical trainings, is done on a pay-as-you-can basis. An additional $350 will help us cover the fees from this campaign and add to our general fund as we prepare to present our next 20-hour community training.
The Impact
Over 400 of the the original Alternatives To EMS zines have been distributed and read by healthcare workers, health activists, and individuals who may be underserved by th
e current healthcare system. This fundraiser will allow us to print 400 copies of the new Anthology, which will be distributed to our already established readership to help empower all types of healthcare providers in their work of caring for their communities.
Our five performances of Holding Onto The Sky will reach North and Northeast Portland residents, healthcare professionals, health activists, and individuals who lack access to quality care. The performance will highlight holes in our current healthcare system, and explore possibilities for local community networks of care. Using the lives, needs and stories of our fictional characters, this play will share visions of new models of care, and empower audiences to support the health and wellness of their communities.
Risks
Donating to these projects is very low-risk. We have already done the hard work of collecting, choosing, and editing stories for the Anthology and of writing and casting Holding Onto The Sky. Now we just need your financial support to culminate these projects through printing and production so that these stories can be shared with healthcare workers, activists, and the broader community. Your support helps us reach our goals of providing more humane alternatives to the current commodified and privilege-dependent healthcare system.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can’t donate, there are still ways you can help.
- Share this campaign on your Facebook, twitter, by email, or by making posters and pinning them up around town!

- Talk to your friends about the work Rosehip is doing, and watch for a zine release party this fall.
- Make a date to come see Holding Onto The Sky the weekends of November 15th and 22nd.
